Maysville Elementary 2nd Graders Explore Science & Responsibility Through Oil Spill Experiments! 🌍🛢️
Maysville 2nd graders at Maysville Elementary stepped into the shoes of real scientists as they experimented with tools used to clean up oil spills! Through hands-on exploration, students tested different methods—such as absorbent materials, skimmers, and barriers—to understand the challenges of protecting our environment after an oil spill.
During the lesson, the students also learned about Cat Island, a once-thriving habitat for wildlife, which is now nearly gone due to the Gulf oil spill. This powerful discovery reminded us that we all have a responsibility to take care of our world.
By thinking like scientists and problem-solvers, the 2nd graders gained a deeper understanding of how human actions impact nature—and how we can work together to make a difference. Keep up the great work, young environmentalists! 🌿💙

This activity wasn’t just about science—it was about grit! When their designs didn’t work the first time, students showed determination, adjusting their setups, testing new ideas, and learning from their mistakes.
