3rd Graders Spin into Science: Testing the Strength of Spider Webs! 🕸️🪨 This week in the STEAM Lab, our curious and creative 3rd grade students explored the world of tensile strength through an exciting hands-on engineering challenge—building and testing spider webs! Working in teams, students designed and constructed three different spider webs, each using a different material: cotton, woven string, and even dry spaghetti. Their goal? To test which web could hold the most weight before breaking. Once the webs were complete, the real fun began! Students carefully placed rocks onto each web, one at a time, watching closely to see how much weight each design could support before it gave way. After the webs were put to the test, students weighed the rocks held by each of their team’s webs to compare results and determine which material had the greatest tensile strength. Along the way, students made predictions, recorded observations, and collaborated like true engineers. This investigation not only sparked excitement but also helped students connect science and engineering to the amazing strength and design found in nature. It was a web of learning, teamwork, and discovery! Proud to be a panther. #PantherPride

4th Graders Discover the Math Magic of Bees in the STEAM Lab 🐝📐 Last week, Maysville 4th grade students took a deep dive into the world of bees—and uncovered the incredible math behind their honeycombs—during a hands-on investigation in the STEAM Lab. The driving question? Are bees amazing mathematicians? The answer was a resounding yes! Students explored how bees instinctively use hexagons to build their honeycombs, and why this geometric shape is the most efficient choice. By comparing hexagons to other shapes like squares and triangles, they discovered how area and perimeter play a major role in structural efficiency—maximizing space while minimizing material. Using real beehive frames from a local beekeeper and samples of hornets’ nests, students examined natural examples of geometric design in the wild. They carefully measured angles, analyzed patterns, and connected their observations back to mathematical principles. This buzz-worthy experience combined science, math, and engineering inspired by the brilliance of nature. Proud to be a panther. #PantherPride
